Pulling from memory now, I don’t recall the actual use of the words price controls, but when a politician talks about addressing corporate price gouging, it rings a familiar bell in my memory dating all the way back to the early 70’S. President Richard Nixon tried price controls when he issued Executive Order 11615, imposing a 90-day freeze on wages and prices in order to counter inflation in 1971.
The latest inflation figures recently released confirm what most of us already know. Inflation is bad and getting worse. In fact, it’s the worst in 40 years.
The latest statistics out from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta shows U.S. growth at a meager 0.5%. With the official definition of “recession” being two-quarters of negative economic growth, the current reading is concerning.
n a recent Money & Sense article, I covered how the Employment Development Department (EDD) and their lucrative bonus payments to the unemployed has essentially made the national $15/hr. minimum wage debate a moot point. Another contentious debate called the “Living Wage” debate, will likely now be turned on its head as the higher wages forced up by the EDD payments will result in exposing the vicious cycle of wage push inflation and its effect on the living wage.
I must admit I have been scratching my head a lot lately due to all the inconsistencies I see in America revolving around Covid and politics.
What will a Biden market look like and how might it be different had Trump been reelected? There would likely be similarities and differences no matter which way it went.
